It took me a long time to get into dresses. Growing up I was a tomboy thanks to the influence of my older brother and cousins who always let me hang with the boys. So it’s no wonder that dresses always felt too soft, too girly, too frilly and feminine for me. Seeing me in a dress before college was a rare sighting. Even in colleges dresses weren’t really my go to for everyday wear. And when I did wear one I never really felt comfortable in the dresses I bought. They were either too tight which made me feel more self-conscious than confident or they didn’t sit right on my pear shaped body. Either way they weren’t flattering and I was always fidgeting with them. They really were more of a hassle than anything. I mean we all remember how annoying it was to have to pull down your dress while trying to twerk on a cute guy at the party. And as you know I’m not really a fan of clothes that require too much fuss. Because dresses felt like so much work to wear I saved my them for going to the clubs. I spent the next few years relying solely on crop tops and jean shorts to survive the heat during the sweltering summer days. It wasn’t until recently that I started to introduce dresses back into my wardrobe as something more than a piece to wear for a night out. Being older and wiser now I’ve learned to pay attention to more than just how the dress looks in pictures or on someone else. I look at the silhouette of dresses to find ones that flatter my shape without hugging me too tightly. Like the way this dress perfectly follows my shape without actually being form fitting. I look for breathable fabrics and where possible materials that also wick the way moisture. That way I’m not sweating like a pig. I also look for dresses with adjustable straps to make sure it lays just right. Because for me to be confident I need to feel comfortable!
