If you live up north sweaters are pretty much a must have, unless you don’t mind the subzero temps. But honestly shopping for a sweater can be just as frustrating as jeans. They never seem to fall at just the right spot or if they do, they bulge in the most unflattering way and usually most women settle on a sub-par piece just to have one to wear. This struggle is even worse when trying to style an over-sized sweater. The biggest risk you face when you opt for these warm, comfy yet challenging pieces is that you can appear frumpy. To avoid the frump when styling an over-sized sweater keep these tips in mind:
- Belts can be your friend. Now I say “can be” because this trick doesn’t work for every body type or with every sweater. That being said, one way to help define your shape in an over-sized sweater is to belt it at your waist.
- Use layers to accentuate your body. If the belt trick isn’t your thing try mixing up your layers. Whether you use a long-line coat to add more height or a cropped jacket to highlight your waist, choose your layering piece to work with your body.
- Play with proportions. I’m sure you’ve heard this phrase a lot but probably don’t know what it means. In a nutshell proportions can refer to the length or width of something. Balance out your proportions by pairing your over-sized sweater with skinny jeans or tights or get creative with a skirt!
It doesn’t have to be hard to style an over-sized sweater, especially since they’re so cozy during the winter months. Just be sure that you’re not hiding your body and using your additional clothes to show off your awesome shape! Loving my coat?
