Let’s face it business professional clothing, aka pant suits are not everyone’s jam.  And even more unfortunate is that most companies are still holding to the business side of their business casual dress code.  So what is a gal to do when your job requires you to wear business professional clothes against your will? I mean besides the obvious answer of quitting your job for one that fits your aesthetic.   For those of you stuck on how to make work clothes feel less stuffy, I’ve got you covered with my quick guide on how to dress down work clothes.

2. Pay Attention to Material

The fabric of your clothing can play a huge role in comfort.  For pieces you plan to take season to season make sure they’re light enough for spring and summer but heavy enough or able to be layered for winter.

4. Learn the Art of Dressing Down While Looking Professional

This means investing in higher quality basics like tees and shoes.  If your work clothes still feel too stuffy pairing them with the right pieces can help take off the edge.  There’s nothing chicer than a good platform sneaker that looks professional but doesn’t kill your feet.

1. Really take the time to investigate and try out your professional pieces

I can’t tell you how many times I used to just buy workwear without any real considerations.  This is a BIG mistake. Take the time to try on the work clothes in question and really get a feel for them.  You want them to feel comfortable, and yes comfortable workwear exists. So be sure to really give test them out before purchasing.

3. Get them Tailored

For true comfort, and forgoing a belt, getting your clothes tailored shouldn’t be optional.  It can be the difference between “these fit alright” and “OMG do you see how I look in these”.  Seriously don’t sleep on a good tailor.

When all is said and done, the best thing you can do is listen to your intuition if you can’t decide if something is going to work.  Trust me that inner voice knows her shit.  If you feel a little doubt in the back of your mind that a piece just won’t be comfortable or a combo just isn’t for you then listen!  At the end of the day you’re the one who has to wear the pieces you buy so make sure you’re paying attention to your instincts!  Also if you’re looking for more suit inspo check out my white striped suit here and how I recently styled my burgundy suit.

Now I want to hear from you, what’s your biggest work wear struggle?
