One of the perks of my job is that I get spend a day of “work” at the Detroit Auto Show. The thing I enjoy most about the Auto Show is the variation in marketing, even within the same company. I like how some companies drew more focus into their displays with futuristic concept cars while some kept it classic and clean.

One of the biggest questions I get is: “What do I wear when meeting up with my co-workers at a casual event?”  This is always tricky because you want to be  comfortable but your idea comfy might not be the same as what your coworkers think, personally I don’t know who wouldn’t want to live in sweats.  There are few factors when trying to choose what to wear when meeting coworkers outside of work:

  • What the nature of the gathering is, are you guys going bowling or meeting to discuss work
  • Where you guys are going to meet
  • How close your relationship with those in attendance
  • Plans for before and after the meeting

If you’re planning to meet to discuss work, regardless of the answers to the other 3 bullets, then you should dress as though you are attending a meeting at work.

Say you’re meeting up just to hang out then take into account who and where you’re meeting.  If you don’t know someone who is attending really well you want to dress on the more conservative side.  I hate to say it but not everyone is open to fashion trends so you want to ere on the safe side so as not to offend parties that you are unfamiliar with.  The last thing you want is for someone you don’t know to read you the wrong way from your clothes and start nasty rumors in the office.

Lastly if you’re meeting up with a bunch of close work buds to catch up on life then feel free to be more expressive with your personal style.  Just keep in mind any errands you might want to do before or after that way you can head straight from one obligation to another without fretting about if you’re over or under dressed!
