How to Add Color to Your Wardrobe

How many times have you told yourself you need to add color to your wardrobe?  And how often have you bought a colorful piece that never gets worn?  That’s because you’re adding color all wrong!

First things first you really don’t need to add color to your wardrobe.  If you’ve made this far without it, odds are it’s not a necessity. Just saying.  But much like you I would convince myself that since my closet was devoid of color it was worthless and uninspired.  So when I shopped I’d reach for a cute blouse but in lilac instead of black or peach instead of white.  Then forget it was even in my closet only to discover it sometime later. I would force myself to wear it, at least once.  I mean I did spend my hard earned money on it.  But inevitably it’s fate was to waste away, buried in my closet collecting dust bunnies.  Sound familiar?

For many of you adding colors means convincing yourself to choose a piece you love but settling for it in a color.  Because life as we know it would end if we didn’t add color to our wardrobe.  But then you avoid that piece like the plague because you’re unsure how to mix it with what you own.  You may struggle to wear it once but ultimately you decide it’s not worth the hassle and toss it.  Then you repeat the process, or just continue to avoid color altogether.  But that strategy is all wrong!

Through much trial and error, I’ve learned the best way to add color is to get completely obsessed with one color at a time.  Which as a millennial I’ll admit being hyper-focused isn’t our forte.  I mean I was built to multi-task.  By focusing on just one color you take a lot of guessing out of buying and styling.  You only consider purchasing pieces in that color that you really love, not settle for.  Then you can evaluate how to mix and match it with what you already own.  As you get more comfortable with wearing that color you can branch out with new ways to rock it.  Ultimately you find the best way to bring a color into your current wardrobe with ease.  Once you’ve nailed one color you can move on to the next.  By focusing all your attention on one color:

  1. You learn your preferences.  Not only do you decide what colors you truly like, but you also decide what’s the best way for them to fit into your current wardrobe.  For some of you it’s through accessories, for others it’s a full on monochrome outfit.  Either way you’re adding a color in a way that suits you.
  2. You really hone your style. This goes hand and hand with number 1.  By expanding out of your comfort zone to include colors you experiment.  Experimenting makes you better at identifying pieces you truly love.  You learn to incorporate them with what you own and style them in new ways.  This ultimately leads to you being more in-tune with your personal style.
  3. You make it easier to add colors.  By learning your preferences when it comes to choosing pieces and styling them in one color,  it become easier to expand.  You can quickly adapt another color and learn how you best like to wear multiple colors, or if you prefer just sticking to one color.  Either way you will save more time on shopping for pieces and creating looks that work for you.   But do keep in mind that not every color is equal.  How you may like to wear one color you might not another.  Be open and patient in this process!

Part of creating a mindful wardrobe is purchasing items strategically.  Say you like a top but it doesn’t come in a color you love don’t force it for the sake of having a more colorful wardrobe.  And if you realize a piece just doesn’t work for you PLEASE return it.  Seriously trying to resell clothes these days is such a hassle!  This technique will help you to spend less while building upon what you already own to create endless options.  And it works for prints too!
